Four things to settle before the flight
Updated 4 November 2026
First time in Indonesia, and booked on Vhale: four short frames cover the visa, the flights into Labuan Bajo, the money to carry and the health basics. Rules change, so each table carries a verify-before-travelling line, and the boarding list on the day must match the passport you carry.
Entering Indonesia: the visa and the arrival form
A party of twenty-odd will carry several passports, and the boat leaves with whoever is on the list. The table below sets out the entry rules for visitors who arrive for a short stay: the visa on arrival, its online version bought before you fly, how long each lasts, what the passport must show, and the arrival card. Most nationalities use the first or the second. A few need a visa in advance, and the table says where to look.
Treat it as a frame and not as legal advice. Immigration rules change, a fee increase has been announced in the press without a date we could confirm, and the official immigration sites are the only place to buy the online visa; third parties charge extra. Verify every line before you travel. What matters to us is narrower: the name on the boarding list must match the passport, and the passport, the original, must be with you on the day.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |
| Extension | Once, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end. |
| Visa-free entry | 30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Onward ticket | Proof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA |
| All Indonesia arrival card | Free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. |
| Arriving in Labuan Bajo | Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight |
| Bali tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee. |

Which airports feed Komodo Airport
Komodo Airport at Labuan Bajo is a small airport with an international label, and almost every guest arrives through a bigger one. Bali is the usual gateway, Jakarta and Surabaya feed it too, and Lombok and Kupang are smaller feeders; the table gives flight times for each and the airlines seen on the routes. Schedules shift with the season, so the table is a guide to the shape of the journey and not a timetable. Check it with your airline before you book.
Two things follow for a boat that sails at 11:00. There is no day trip from Bali on Vhale, because the voyage begins and ends at Labuan Bajo, and we do not promise a same-day connection from anywhere. And the route has no Lombok leg. The sensible plan is to land the evening before and sleep in town; the hotels page makes the case, and the flight home is a question of the hour the boat returns.
| Airport | Komodo International Airport, code LBJ |
|---|---|
| Usual connections | Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB); Lombok and Kupang are smaller feeders |
| Flight time to Labuan Bajo | From Bali about 1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min; from Surabaya about 1 h 30 min; from Jakarta 2 h 30 min to 3 h; from Lombok about 1 h |
| Airlines | Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia from Bali and Jakarta; Super Air Jet from Surabaya; Wings Air on the shorter island routes. Schedules change, so check before you book. |
| Airport to the harbour | 2 to 3 km, about 10 minutes by car |

Rupiah, cards and the cashpoint at the quay
The currency is the rupiah, and it is the only one that works in town. You find cash machines on the road by the harbour and in the arrivals hall, but not on the islands and not in the park, so draw what you need before the pier. One bank's machine can refuse a foreign card that the next one accepts, so try a second. Limits per withdrawal are low, and the table gives the range along with the machine fees. Decline the offer to convert the sum into your own currency on the screen.
Your fare is not paid at a cash machine. It goes through the channels on the booking page, and a card payment adds 3 percent. The cash you carry is for tips, small purchases ashore and the things nobody quotes. A party of twenty-four with nothing smaller than the largest note will discover how few people can change it.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

Health, sun and sea
Take out travel insurance that covers medical treatment and evacuation, and read the policy for boats and trekking. The booking terms recommend it, and the table says why: hospitals in Flores ask for payment first, and the best equipped one is in Labuan Bajo itself. Pharmacies are in town, not on the islands. Bring your own medicines, in your own bag, with a copy of the prescription.
Tap water is not drinkable here. On Vhale the fare carries free-flow mineral water, so a bottle in the cabin is the least of your worries, but brush your teeth with the water you were given. With a sundeck above you the sun is the real hazard, and a cap, sunscreen and sunglasses do more good than most pills. Anyone in the party who suffers from motion sickness should bring what already works, after a word with their doctor. None of this is medical advice, and your own doctor knows more.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

FAQ
How long before my flight home should the boat be back at the quay?
The three-day route is back at the quay at 12:00 and the two-day route around 17:30, and the ride onward, to hotel or airport, is already paid. Book a flight that leaves well after those hours, and a little later still in the wet months. A shorter margin is a gamble on the weather.
Is there a day trip to Komodo from Bali on Vhale?
No. The voyage starts and ends at Labuan Bajo, and no same-day connection from Bali or Lombok is promised. Fly in the evening before and sleep in town. The one-day fare is a day on the water from Labuan Bajo, with no night aboard and no Lombok leg.
